Accelerating Progress for Women in Tech: Power Learn Project (PLP)
Statistically, we have more men occupying the tech industry. The tech scene has long been dominated by male voices, and a new narrative is emerging- one where women are just not just finding their place but also claiming it. And guess what? Last month, we had the privilege of teaming up with the Power Learn Project as they launched Power Her . An initiative to champion diversity, equality and inclusion for more equitable future in tech.

Aida Nga'nga the powerhouse from Ihub emphasized on the need for women to put themselves out there. "Sure, we all have those days when all we want it to be couch potatoes and its okay," she chuckled, "but we've got to push ourselves out there! Its time to speak up about our strengths and show the world what we're made of!" She also tackled on work-life balance. The need for workplaces to give us room to nurture our lives while building our careers. Work-life balance is tough but with the right support system, harmony can be found.

On the panel, we also had Melanie Keita from Melanin Kapital where she highlighted the disconnect between investors and women founders. As an investor, Melanie revealed the frustrating truth: sometimes the opportunities are there, but the women to seize them are nowhere to be found. And as a founder herself, she knows the firsthand uphill battle of securing funding.

Systematic barriers hindered direct access but with resilience, the barriers can be broken. As women, we need to always show up for ourselves and press on even when it gets hard. She also mentioned the need for a support system around us through role models where we can embody success to continue challenging ourselves to be better versions.

Irene Githinji from Microsoft encouraged people to show up at events and network. 'Your network will help build your career. It might be hard to show up always but you need to take the leap and show up for yourself.' We women, are victims of imposter syndrome and we end up disqualifying ourselves, “Let someone that’s paid to disqualify you but do it not you disqualify yourself” she said. As a woman in tech plug into the different opportunities, look for them and don’t be afraid to pursue your dreams. Take advantage unapologetically!

Recently Microsoft launched the WINGS initiative Women Inspiring and Nurturing Students. This initiative allows for students to be placed with mentors for 12 months. This would help reduce the leaky pipe situation in tech-related courses. This is a great opportunity to leverage and learn how to put yourself out there.

Each speaker highlighted the need for mentors to help one thrive in their careers and urged us to claim our seats at the table and find our voices. Gone are the times women had to fight or take a seat at the corner, in this modern era, men are our allies as we complement each other in the evolving tech landscape.

In conclusion, the journey to success in the tech industry is paved with exciting opportunities and valuable connections. By actively engaging in events and networking, diving into hackathons, showcasing your skills, and boldly putting yourself out there, you're not just building a career – you're crafting a path to greatness. So let's amplify each other's voices, break barriers, and soar to new heights together. Embrace these highlights as the blueprint for your remarkable journey in the dynamic world of technology!
